Education pathways

Ara mātauranga

Horowhenua offers a range of education providers and learning opportunities from early childcare centres and Te Kōhanga Reo through to tertiary providers.

With multiple early learning centres, 18 primary schools, three colleges, UCOL, the Horowhenua Learning Centre, neighbouring Te Wānanga o Raukawa, Horowhenua is well placed to foster a community of life-long learners.

Innovative programmes aimed at developing and supporting young people to reach their potential, and transition into employment, also make Horowhenua a place full of opportunities.

Ako Horowhenua

Education Horowhenua is a local initiative that brings together a community of educators from across all sectors to improve educational outcomes for children and young people in the district.

Below is a snapshot of educational outcomes -

  • 18 year olds with a minimum of NCEA level 2 or equivalent, by the age they left school in 2018 was 91.2%.
  • Early child education participation rates were sitting at 97% in 2021.
  • 74.4% of school leavers stayed at school until at least their 17th birthday in 2020.

Scholarships

Youth Excellence Scholarship

 Horowhenua District Council established the Horowhenua Youth Excellence Scholarships in 2004.  Aimed at rewarding and celebrating young people’s efforts and achievements in community services, sport, academia and art and culture, 12 scholarships are awarded each year.  

Matauranga Māori Scholarship

Matauranga Māori Scholarships were established in 2021 to encourage and foster rangatahi of the Horowhenua to study at tertiary level.  

Recipients must meet the requirements for University or Runanga entrance into the chosen course, whakapapa to a Horowhenua-based iwi and commit to returning to the district or region, once their studies are complete, to work in this field.  
Each recipient received a $30,000 scholarship towards their studies.

Toitū Kaupapa Māori Mātauranga

The Maōri Education Trust administers scholarships to Māori students attending tertiary institutes.  For more info, visit maorieducation.org.nz

Te Pōkai Tara – Universities New Zealand

Universities NZ, through its Scholarships Committee, administers a wide range of scholarships at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, on behalf of charitable trusts, private donors, industry and other benefactors.  For more info, visit universitiesnz.ac.nz/scholarships

Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship

The New Zealand Government offers Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships including full academic scholarships and short term training scholarships for workers to gain work skills, English skills and workplace experience.
