Te Awahou Indoor Bowls Hall

The large red building on the left is the Te Awahou Indoor Bowls Hall which began life as the Foxton Harbour Board Shed and Wharf in 1925.

It was built as a replacement for Levin and Co’s Storage Shed and Wharf. This shed was built in 1907 but was destroyed by fire in 1922.

Levin and Co. were the only company operating shipping out of the Port of Foxton from 1916 to 1922. Their ships were the steamers “Queen of the South” and “Awahou”. Levin and Co’s establishment was larger than that built by the Harbour Board and extended over the area to the west of this sign.

The fire blackened piles of the Levin and Co. Wharf can be seen towards the river. These give a clear idea of how much the river has shrunk since the Whirokino Cut was constructed in 1942. This deviation of the flow of the Manawatū River hastened the demise of the Port of Foxton. It virtually ceased to function in 1942. The wharf was sold for demolition in 1951.
