Tucked just off State Highway 1 in Kuku, Waikōkopu Grove and Orchard is a boutique olive oil grove rich in whenua, whānau, and flavour.
In 2006, Richard Anderson and Dr Huhana Smith (Ngāti Tukorehe, Kuku) purchased back a unique U-shaped block of land through which the Waikōkopu Stream flows. Since 2007, they have been steadily restoring native vegetation along the stream, inspiring the name of the grove.
In 2009, with the help of Māori relations and close friends, the couple planted their main olive grove, Frantoio, Leccino, and Pendolino varieties, on an old Ōhau riverbed, establishing a foundation for premium, locally grown olive oil.
From 2016 to 2020, the grove welcomed the involvement of Syrian New Zealanders who brought intergenerational olive-growing expertise to the land. Today, the olives are carefully harvested, pruned, and pressed in collaboration with The Olive Press in the Wairarapa.
You can find Waikōkopu Grove extra virgin olive oil at The Greenery in Manakau, Māoriland Hub and through We Love Local in Ōtaki.
While other produce grown on the Grove & Orchard is available at these venues, Huhana is now encouraging people to come buy at her gate, including seasonal items like basil pesto, chutneys, sauces, and relishes.
